Session Abstract:

Combining the portability of a Virtual Machine with industry SAN advantages such as reliability, availability and serviceability reduces costs.
The majority of Virtual Machines are located on a Storage Area Network. Virtual Machine creation and management in a properly designed storage environment is the key to a successful deployment, for scaling up your business applications. Combining the attributes of a Virtual Machine (such as portability, scalable storage, OS independent, ease-of-backup, tunable performance, and highly available with clustering) and Storage Area Network advantages (reliability, availability and serviceability or RAS) reduces cost of ownership. This session reveals the methods to architect and manage Virtual Machines for optimal operations, including best practices and troubleshooting tips. Topics include Virtual Machine architecture, storage volume considerations (expansion and migration), SCSI reservations, advance multipathing use cases, zoning options, and storage IO queue considerations.

Speaker 1:

Cris Banson is a Technical Alliance Manager working with VMware's storage partners. He is responsible for driving the technical and business aspects of the joint solutions and offerings with regards to the VMware Virtual Infrastructure vision. Prior to joining VMware, he worked for EMC in various technical roles focused on both FC and IP storage, and management. He also has a strong background in enterprise data network design. He has a Master's degree in Computer Engineering.

Speaker 2:

Lucas Nguyen is a Technical Alliance Manager for storage partners at VMware, Inc. He has more than 12 years of experience in SAN quality assurance, performance analysis, and systems engineering. Lucas has designed, deployed, and tested large SAN fabrics at Brocade. He received an award from Adaptec for his benchmark analysis of microprocessor vs. state machine implementation in FibreChannel HBAs. Lucas has also held technical positions at Legato & Sony. He holds a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering and a master's degree in Software Engineering from SJSU and National University, respectively.
