VM ware, Server 2003 and active directory

I need help setting up an active directory that will work when I place other xp workstations within the virtual network. I am currently in a 2003 server class, so I really do not know too much.

I was able so far to install server 2003 onto the wmware. I would like to add workstation clients that can log and use the server. But first I need to get the virtual active directory working.

I am not sure which DNS name to use. Since I am loaded onto a laptop that I take everywhere I do not have static IP address. I read somewhere about setting up the dns and settings to use this laptop as the local dns address.

So I need to know which dns name to use so that the virtual network clients will be able to use the virtual server.

Thank you,
Scott

Re: VM ware, Server 2003 and active directory

I take it you are using Vmware Server or Vmware workstation and are testing a Win2k3 DC / XP environment?

In any case you will have to configure DNS as normal and point the Domain Controller's DNS to itself. All your clients DNS will need to point to your DC.
