What would you recommend for thin client environment?


Here is the scenario: Looking to virtualize desktops in a manufacturing environment. Will use RDP from a thin clent to connect to Virtual Machines. The question: What would be the best VM product to use for hosting the guests?

Have tested VMWorkstation - pro's can clone, con's cannot start guests on boot up, cannot deploy from template

VMServer - ?

ESX Server ?

Guests will be XP Pro in AD network. Plenty of horsepower on the physical server, tons of storage on SAN

Any Suggestions or experience with this?

ESX is definitely the way to go. Look around at the success stories (Huntsville Hospital being one of them), ESX just makes more sense when it comes to attaching via a thin teminal. DRS and HA alone make it worthwhile.

Any benefits in using VMWare Virtual Desktop Infrastructure as opposed to ESX server?

Don't get confused. They are basically the same. What people normally refer to as VDI is simply workstations running on ESX. What VMWare is now calling VDI is workstations running on ESX with their VDM broker. If you need a broker, that may be the way you want to go, if you don't need a broker, then ESX is all you need.
