Re: VMware's Hypervisor (ESX Server) vs. Microsoft's Hyper-V
The product still available to download, go to microsoft site, windows 2008 and download the version with Hyper-V.
To make the install you must have a 64 bits processor and Intel-V or AMD-V.
When you make the install use english settings everywhere because if you don t Hyper-V will not start, Obviously if you want to make vmotion equivalent, forget about it, this option is delivered inside MS SCVMM and you still have to stop the VM.
Re: VMware's Hypervisor (ESX Server) vs. Microsoft's Hyper-V
Please note, this is NOT a Microsoft Bash!
90% of 10 installations is still only 9 installations.
The Microsoft Hyper-V will allow for paravirtualization of Windows guests and traditional virtualization of Linux and Unix guests. Guests will also require an agent installed if they aren't paravirtualized (and may even if they are paravirtualized).
Hyper-V cannot be separated from what is basically a full install of 2008 (with all of its resource overhead), and would require you to have a minimum of 1 Windows server per virtualization host, even if you are ONLY virtualizing Linux or Unix.
Again, this isn't a Microsoft bash, I have just under 500 VMs in our ESX environment and 98.2439694% of them are Windows. I do, however, have a problem with their virtualization model that requires their incredibly bloated, expensive OS as the base.
