Performance: 3i versus ESX 3

Should we expect any differences in performance between 3i and ESX 3? If so, some examples would be helpful.

Thanks,

Bill

ESX3I will be coming from the 3.5 family and everything else should be protected by NBA. During VMworld General Session they had mentioned something in line with a 40% increase

Still, I seriously doubt that 3i would be any faster or slower than the standard ESX version. The VMM is the same, and the only thing that differs is the boot medium and the Service Console.

I would guess (and I haven't touched 3i yet so it is really a guess) that there will be some performance gains because there is no memory reserved for the service console, and there is no service console to peg to CPU 0 so the CPU scheduler should have a slightly easier time.

These are probably minor points, but still they will affect performance.

Yes, cpu0 will be more available and there will be more memory available for the virtual machines. The Service Console was typically 268-800Mb, and I also can't see how the Service Console occupied a 2GB footprint, maybe except on the disk. There's no reason that the virtualization overhead in 3i should be any smaller. Having cpu0 available could only give you a high performance gain (40%?) if you only have a single cpu core in your system, but I guess running esx on a single cpu core is an unsupported config. ;)

I did say those would make small improvements.:-) I didn't think that would account for the whole 40%
