Yes, I agree to a point but the problem is launch time and bandwidth usage. What Citrix, or even 2k8 TS, has going for it is that when a user logs on the first time is logs them in and then every additional login to the same server (launch of app) is extremely fast as you are not requiring to load the profile and a slew of other items. I don't know if this can be done with VDI the way you described it and to wait 60 seconds for each app to launch would be hell on the user base. This is a problem that Citrix was able to solve years ago with "session sharing".
I also love the "citrix killer" title. I just don't anything will "kill" Citrix but someday there will be better solutions for different areas where Citrix is currently being used. I still think that Citrix is the best remote access solution around as ICA is just so amazing over a wan with low bandwidith and high latency. I don't think VDI can do that, not at least today or even tomorrow. Maybe next year...

Citrix Killer? I do not want to see this because it would completely break my routine. J/K. Our entire organization is wrapped up in Citrix and I love it. For smaller companies I suppose there are better alternatives because of the price, but as long as we can afford Citrix then we will run it. The users love the experiece so I may keep an eye on the competition, but only one eye.
Re: Citrix killer?
I think Citrix and VMware are both aiming at each other...VMware introduces VDI, Citrix buys XEN, etc.
I've been a citrix engineer for many years, and think it's great, but it can be a pain to work with. I've seen many times when one app has hosed an entire citrix box. The ability to publish just an application running on a VM to me seems like the difference between publishing an app in a seamless window vs. creating a terminal services session and publishing a whole desktop.
WE need to consider Citirix as a software that publishes documents as required. AT the same time VMware to considered as ultimate solution for Desktop virtualization. All the desktop can be loacted at Datacentre hosted on High Avialiblity Hardware server. VMware is Excellent solution cutting down the price of infrasturcture maintainence like UPS .l
