What's the cheapest fastest storage I can buy to test io performance?

Several SSD's in an external array?

Hi

It very much depends what type of performance you are looking for?

The small data center rack that will be on show in the VMware booth is an example of our baby array in the CLARiiON family, the CX4-120, in this case stacked in its first tray with 10 400GB EFD (Enterprise Flash Drives) drives

As each EFD drive can deliver a conservative 2500 raw I/Ops - that is quite a capability in a single shelf of disks and will be powering upwards of 40 demos on the VMware stand

But as I suspect we are all aware perfromance is not really something that can be defined in terms of raw I/Ops alone, but is rather a combination of elements such as the following:

Response time

Proportion of random to sequential transactions

Proportion of reads to writes

Block size

Whether the transactions are going through or by passing cache

EFD - Enterprise Flash Drives for example have been found to offer startling performance with small block random reads (around 8Kb). However, while sterling their performance relative to their cost, improvements in response times etc. for a large block sequential write (such as a backup job) is less impressive

But if inexpensive yet impressive raw performance of a certain random read centric small block workload profile is what you are seeking, then the CX4-120 supporting 10Gb iSCSI / 8Gb Fiber Channel and Enterprise Flash Drives may be what you are looking for

Get a WhipTail!

WhipTail is a patent pending solid state storage applicance (SSD) that solves most business-critical disk contention and latency challenges in database and virtualization storage performance.
