VLAN Questions

Hi:

I am very new in VMware. Can someone answer my simple questions below? (Truly appreciate it as I come from HP-UX background):

Q1. Can a VM be created in an environment without an "actual" production LAN or VLAN already working? Basically what it means is that there is NO switch being connected and the only thing that I have is the Management LAN setup via a direct cable to the Management Port at the back.

If it can be installed, what should be done to port whatever has been setup to the real environment after customer has setup the VLAN correctly?

Q2. I have seen my colleague did the ESX 4 Server installation today onto the blades successfully.

Thanks.

Bennie

Yes, just means you wont be able to communicate outside of the vSwitch.

However, if you creat two VM's on the same vswitch on the same VLAN, they will be able to talk to each other.

This is a bit of a loose question, and im assuming your talking about vCenter.

Yep, we have HP proliant blades.

If your interested in what hardware ESX 4 supports, check their hardware compatibility guide.
