Physical to Virtual

I have set up a new vSphere server and I want to create a virtual from a physical system.  The server is on one network, the server it is on has two network cards.  I want to move my email server which sits in my DMZ.  Can I set the 2nd nic on vmware server to the DMZ and virtualize the mail server?  I know there is a program that allows this but I was not sure if I can have two networks on the same machine.  Thank you

Hi Allan,

Yes, you can point one nic to the DMZ and one to the internal LAN.

Re: Physical to Virtual

Don't forget that, if you are virtualizing a heavy I/O server like Exchange or SQL, the conversion process will quiesce I/O on the source while it is running. For extremely heavy I/O servers, this could potentially cause data loss so it is recommended as a precaution that the conversion occur during a user outage. If it is an MS Exchange server, shut down services on the physical source before converting (or use the cold clone CD but this may be complicating things)
