I'd really go to the VMWare support forums for this, but just as a thought. Are you trying to "dial up" the internet from the Windows XP install? My guess would be that Windows is trying to control your internet access when VMWare will actuall do that for you and simply passes your Mac internet connection through.

If you're using software in Windows to connect to the internet, just get rid of it and VMWare should do the rest for you.

I was using Fusion v.1 and everything just worked with no tweaking. To be fair, I was using VMWare to access my BootCamp installation of Windows, so that could be different.
