The best place to start would probably be with VMware Workstation 6.5 which runs on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Linux 6.06
Ubuntu Linux 5.10
Ubuntu Linux 5.04
VMware Player can also be found in the canonical repositories.
For other versions of ubuntu you might have to do a few workarounds for getting VMware to play nicely:

There's a bug in 8.10 that will make the shift & control key's behave a bit strange (hang). You can work around that issue too:
