The best place to start would probably be with VMware Workstation 6.5 which runs on Ubuntu.

VMware Server 2.0 supports the following Ubuntu versions:

  • Ubuntu Linux 8.04

  • Ubuntu Linux 7.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 7.04

  • Ubuntu Linux 6.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 6.06

VMware Server 1.0.x supports the following Ubuntu versions:

  • Ubuntu Linux 5.04 and 5.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 6.06 (experimental support)

VMware Workstation 6.5 & Player 2.5 support the following versions:

  • Ubuntu LTS 8.04

  • Ubuntu Linux 7.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 7.04

  • Ubuntu Linux 6.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 6.06

  • Ubuntu Linux 5.10

  • Ubuntu Linux 5.04

VMware Player can also be found in the canonical repositories.

For other versions of ubuntu you might have to do a few workarounds for getting VMware to play nicely:

http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-vmware-server-2-on-ubuntu-8.10

http://www.luisrocha.net/2008/10/installing-vmware-player-in-ubuntu.html

There's a bug in 8.10 that will make the shift & control key's behave a bit strange (hang). You can work around that issue too:
