Re: SAP Virtualisation on VMware

Dushyant,

We see more and more adoption of SAP on VMware in both Test, Development and Training environments as well as Production. All customer success stories poublished on http://www.vmware.com/partners/alliances/technology/partnership.html

These and many more customers are running SAP on VMware in production and are very satisfied with the results. Please let me know if you have more questions. As an additional information I attached our latest White Paper around customer use cases. If you have more questions you can reach me directly at christoph@vmware.com

Best regards,

Christoph

Re: SAP Virtualisation on VMware

Yes, I have worked with a client who decided to migrate their SAP environment from being hosted by SAP's datacenter to being hosted on VMware 3.5 on site. They decided to do this after very good experience with performance improvements to other applications they migrated from physical to VMware 3.5.

I'm told they have 500 SAP users.

Hardware used is:

Two IBM 3850, Dual Quad Core 3 GHz, 128 GB RAM

IBM DS4700 SAN with one ~4 TB RAID 5 FC shelf dedicated to SAP

Software:

VMware ESX 3.5 Update 2

Window 2003 Datacenter VMs (but I would recommend Enterprise since Sysprep Guest Customization not supported for Datacenter, although I used it successfully with a workaround anyway)

Oracle DBs

SAP version 4.6 - I wasn't responsible for SAP but I think this is what I was told the version was. This version is not officially supported by SAP on VMware ESX. Later version has performance improvements that reduce memory paging.

VMs:

8 Dev/QA

9 Production

Many of the VMs have 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM allocated. I believe this was more RAM than necessary.

Resource Utilization:

CPU - Peaks at about 40% of cluster capacity

Memory - 25% of cluster capacity used

This environment went live for all 500 users about 2 weeks ago. The users have reported being very happy with the performance improvement.
