Re: BOF Sessions.
First off, I got the word that the BOF's were not going well and skipped the 2 I had scheduled and used the block to spend time in the Solutions Exchange (I did not have enough time in my schedule to see everything in there). There is clearly room for improvement to how the BOF's are executed in order to be effective. I think the idea of an informal setting where we could openly disucss a specific topic is valuable, but the setting was not conducive to communicating.
Stan, I am curious as to why you saw having laptops in play was an issue in the BOF's? I just ask because I was not there and wonder how they were distracting.
Re: BOF Sessions.
I agree. I think the idea was a good one but the implementation left a bit more to be desired. Mainly, from you perpective, it seemed to be a wide variance in what people are doing in their shops and it was hard to pin down exactly what you may be able to use in your shop and what you may not be able to use. Perhaps, the moderators could have helps make this a bit more easier on the participants.
Re: BOF Sessions.
I and my collegues completely agree
It was a disaster. 1 person without a microphone, no beamer, only small Whitboard or only a monitor and a crowd of people around him.
Signed in for the session and standing at the back and could not see anything or hear anything. Some collagues had several of these BOF-sessions. (Remark: signed in several weeks before!!!)
AND we came whole the way from Holland (netherlands) and made hugh costs and then this. It was not known before that this the way the session was presented (organisation) 1 Collegue had 4 of these sessions, but after the first didn't attend the others, but went to Selb-labs and other sessions (if there was a seat availble!!)
We won't come again to VMworld when organizing it in the same way !!
And signing in months before. And on a start-day of sigining for the sessions (already booked the flight hotels etc.) within a ONE hour many sessions where booked FULL (some could sign in a day earlier!!). This is also a reason not to go to VMworld again.
So there is somthing to learn for the organisation or is the number of attendees more important !!
Re: BOF Sessions.
In the earlier years, the BOFs were a much more low-key event. They had some tables in the meals area. A few people got together around a table (representing a topic) and chatted.
This year, they tried to make it more mainstream, by having the different lounges. They clearly underestimated the popularity, and did take note of it, as well as the complaints.
As for sessions, yes, you'll have to sign up in advance for the sessions you are interested in. If some session has a lot of demand and has filled up early, they usually try to schedule a duplicate session to accommodate more people. You'll want to look out for the overflow sessions, and sign up early.
Just something to keep for the next VMworld.
Cheers!
I attended the VDI BOF, and I was lucky enough to have a seat. My issue was it seemed that the BOF was an after thought. Not much time was spend in developing the concept or the area. The presenter did not seem ready and organized and basically was answering questions.
My feeling is that VMware had too many people for VMworld this year. I was told there was 14,000 people attending. Some of my comments on the evaluation forms were to break it apart as an East Coast (Orlando)/West Coast (LA or Las Vegas) deal. This I would hope divide the 14,000 into a much better 7,000.
Speaking of fun, I was able to only get into 1 LAB on Monday. The rest have 200 people waiting for 48 seats, made a lot of sense, not.
