quad-core processors

 

Hi all,

 

 

Which vmware products actually support quad-core processors? Does the free version, VMware Server, supports it?

 

 

Also, how does the virtual machines makes use of te quad-core technology?

I beleive that all versions support it.

There is typically 1 CPU, but  up to 4 cores that you can assign to a given Guest/VM

 

 

 

 

 

I am running ESX & ESXi on a Quad 6600 and have the ability to assign 1-4 cores to any of my VM's

All VMware products support quad-core processors...

 

 

A VM is scheduled time on any available processor. If you have a 1 vCPU VM then you will be scheduled time where ever the scheduler finds a spot. If you have a 2 vCPU VM then the scheduler has to find two free processors...

 

 

If you want to use 64-bit operating systems then you may need to enable the virtualization technology in teh systems BIOS, I have found it is normally enabled by default.

 

 

Later in the year and into next year there should be six and eight core processors being announced...

The free VMWare server product does support quad core processors, but you can only assign 2 virtual processors to any single virtual machine
