Hardware assisted virtualization

I cannot find any official documentation explaining the usage of intel VT or AMD-V by ESX server 3.5. Is there any place where this is explained? Specifically, is hardware assist required for 64 bit hosts? And can 32 bit hosts use it as a choice or not?

Thanks.

Re: Hardware assisted virtualization

I would like to see informations about VT-d in ESX. Also exact performance numbers of Windows machines on XEN which uses Intel VT or AMD-V for it.

Re: Hardware assisted virtualization

Here's what I found when digging a bit deeper on this.

The current version of VMware ESX requires HW assist (Intel VT enabled processors) for 64 bit VM's and current version of ESX does not require HW assist for 32bit VM's or Guest OSes.

Let me know if this answers your question.
