Session ID:

VM1700

Session Title:

vApps and advanced VM templates in vSphere 4

Session Abstract:

This session is a deep dive into two of the new features in VMware vSphere 4.0, namely vApps and Open Virtualization Format (OVF) support. These features greatly simplify the installation and management of complex multi-tiered software solutions.
vApps provide a natural way to represent and manage multi-tiered software solutions in vSphere. OVF support enable easy sharing of software solutions and advanced customization during deployment of single VM software solutions and complex multi-tiered VM software solutions.
This session will go over these concepts and how they are presented to the user in the vSphere client interface. It will present practical scenarios where these features are used, including creation and configuration of a complex multi-tiered vApp using the vSphere client, and sharing of OVF template between multiple VMware vCenter Server instances. The session will then showcase an example that uses the OVF environment to do advanced runtime configuration of a VM template. The example includes application-level configuration, controlling IP settings, and getting a dynamic application URL to be displayed in the VMware vSphere Client.
