Abstract The Virtual Test Bed (VTB) is a prototype of a virtual test environment which can be used for testing applications and devices having various network and storage subsystems requirements. Example requirements for testing various products can be availability of the following ? NAS setup involving multiple file systems ? Multiple volumes and tape devices ? iSCSI SAN ? VPN and firewall ? VLAN and Routing protocol support ? 3D OpenGL support This paper describes based on our experimentation, various open-source and freeware solutions that can be integrated for provisioning the virtual test bed using minimal hardware setup. The emulated environment is capable of running unmodified software and can also interact with physical devices. Thus, it enables testing of applications and some of the devices requiring diverse configurations with reduced logistics and hardware setup. Sample case studies are included to bring out the cost, time and effort savings in pre-production environments.
