Session Title:

What's in a Display Protocol? Architecture, Approaches and Advances in Remote Display Technology

Session Abstract:

Remote graphics technology is a crucial component of most VDI architectures. Despite this importance however, the fundamentals behind remote display technology and protocols often represent a poorly-understood "black box" in VDI deployments. The purpose of this session is to demystify this technology and explain what's going on behind the scenes in a typical client-server remote display scenario. We will first cover the basic architecture and components in the graphics subsystem of typical OSes such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux. We will then move on to examining the similarities and differences between various remote display protocols in how they interface with the system and how the implementation and design choices impact the user's experience. Finally, we will examine the utility of application- and use-case-specific components such as multimedia redirection and explain how such approaches can complement a basic remote display component in delivering the best possible desktop experience.
