Session Abstract:

As part of the SAP Managed Services division, SAP Hosting operates the global enterprise data center infrastructure of the SAP group. This presentation shows how SAP Hosting implemented VMware software into some of its internal business processes. Infrastructure topics are discussed as well as some examples of the identified usage scenarios for virtualized environments. The session gives details on management benefits as well as the challenges of a large virtual infrastructure environment. It describes configuration, setup and management of large-scale VMware environments and provides an insight into data center automation through end-user self-services. This session demonstrates how SAP operates one of the world's largest IT infrastructures, explains some of the technology approaches and shows cases where VMware helps to manage such a challenging business.

Speaker 1:

Markus Winter has been working in the field of landscape optimization and virtualization for the last seven years and has driven virtualization within the SAP group since then. Whilst serving in different departments and regions such as the Americas or Asia-Pacific, he soon realized the impact of virtualization technology on landscape architecture and IT business processes. Today, he is located at SAP's headquarters in Germany coordinating global virtualization projects as part of the SAP Managed Services division at SAP Hosting. He has built up an internal Virtual Computing Center of Expertise (CoE VCom) specialized on hosted environments and architecture design and is responsible for all matters regarding infrastructure and service innovations. Markus holds an Engineering degree in Media Computer Science from the University of Applied Sciences (HdM), Stuttgart, Germany. In partnership with Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany, he pursues a PhD in IT business doing research on advanced computing environments and future hosting infrastructure design.
