Data Center Migrations Utilizing Virtual TechnologyPresenter:
Long ViewFollowing the merger of three independent petroleum companies, Long View Systems was approached for help in solving the problem of collapsing three geographically dispersed data centers to a single consolidated data center with low cost, high redundancy and high efficiency. Servers were virtualized into a temporary VMware Infrastructure 3 environment. The virtual servers were backed up utilizing esxRanger. A scheduled data snap synchronized the backup data. esxRanger was then used to restore the virtual servers into the VMware Infrastructure 3 environment in the target data center. We reduced moving costs and lowered operational costs due to the consolidation with high redundancy and fast fall back and recovery of all servers. At any time there are up to 4 copies of each server to fall back to; the original server in the source data center, the source virtual server, the backup on the CIFS share, and the new virtual server in the target environment. Cutovers from one server to another were measured in minutes with low down time.
