The Sunday night before my first VMworld I had nothing planned. I didn't know the area, and I wished there was something organized to do. Sunday night has always been about vendor dinners and vendor parties. As every small customer out there knows, not everyone makes the invite list. I was looking for a more open, community focused event to look forward to. A way to start talking with others about what they're doing with the technology and relax after a long day of travel.

So for the last two years, I've helped organize an alternative venue to meet up and do just that. (I guess those crazy kids call it a tweetup now) It's been great to meet other attendees, make new friends, drink a few pints, and see what people are looking forward to in the coming week.

Two years ago in San Francisco, we met at Johnny Foleys Irish House . Last year in Vegas it was at The Nine Fine Irishman. Same great idea, good turnout.

This year we're looking to break the mold. I've enlisted a crack team of party planners to help me get this under control. We also have a fantastic group of vendor sponsors pitching in to put this over the top. Head over to our main page for all the details.

Same simple rule as last year:

Technology talk and networking with your peers is strongly encouraged, however if you're talking about a product you sell, you're buying drinks (sponsoring vendors excluded of course), We will hear no excuses (seriously, we've worked out a deal for you to work it off in the kitchen). Vendor engineers are excluded from this rule again this year as they tend to be extremely funny after a few pints, and can't help themselves.

So, I'm just wondering...with all the seemingly 'space' issues with last year's event (breakout session bottlenecks, etc.), and since I've not yet been to Vegas, is The Venetian big enough to accommodate VMworld? i.e. is it bigger than the San Fran Conv Ctr?

Hotel Recommendation for VMworld 2010?

I will be attending VMworld for the first time this year and was curious if seasoned attendees had any recommendations for Hotels that are located near to the Moscone Convention Center? I thought it might be advantageous to book the Hotel in advance of Early Bird registration unless VMware has some sort of good package deal for the Conf and Hotel?

This is my fourth VMworld and it's probably my last. The lines are ridiculous and people are forced to attend something they aren't really interested in or nothing at all. Is your experience different? If so, let me know your secret because I don't want to spend half the time here waiting in line.

Amature Photographers - VMworld 2010

I can not remove anything from my schedule in the builder. I can continue to add things, but I cannot remove anything. I see that it is some Java Script function, but it does not seem to do anything.

I have tried it in, Firefox 3.5x (Windows and Linux), Chrome 5.0.375.125 (Windows) and IE 8. All of them show the exact same behavior which is that nothing happens at all when clicking the "Remove from Schedule" link.

I have also tried this from two different sites that utilize different service providers.

Anyone else seeing the same thing? Sure is frustrating.

VMWorld 2010 is scheduled for September 2010 in San Francisco, again.

Why does VMware insist on staying on the West Coast for VMworld? I thought Vegas was at least a step in the right direction (literally). Couldn't the conference alternate from west to east every other year? It would be great to see VMWorld in Boston, New York, Orlando, etc. and would certainly help for us east coast folks who are having difficulty getting travel across the US approved right now.

Just curious if this was ever even considered...

Last year, the night before VMworld started, a bunch of folks from the vmtn boards linked up and had a few drinks at Johnny Foleys Irish House. I got a chance to talk with some people, make some new friends, drink a few pints, and see what people were looking forward too in the coming week. Now, I know that a bunch of you are going to be attending one, or maybe more vendor parties Sunday night. Fantastic. The rest of this message isn't for you lot.

The rest of you downtrodden, jet lagged souls are welcome to head down to the Nine Fine Irishmen. It's going to be as informal as it gets. If you're interested in talking about VMware, hop utilization rates, whatever, there will be a few of us attendees down there Sunday night around 7 PM.

To add to the festive atmosphere, everyone coming down needs to simply adhere to a simple agreement. (added this year for entertainment value only) If you start talking about a product that you a) own b) work for c) have financial interest in, or d) sell, you're buying the next round. VMware engineers are excluded from this as they tend to be extremely funny prior to and after a few pints.

If you're planning on coming, please just reply in this thread so I have an idea of how many additional folks might show up.

New this year, attendees must pre-register for sessions. Without pre-registration, you will not be given access to any breakout sessions.

If you are registered for VMworld, view a full listing of sessions, organize your days, and sign-up for the sessions you want to attend. Most sessions will be repeated at least once and we will be adding additional sessions based on popularity, so if it is full, check back.

If you are not yet registered, what are you waiting for? Register now and build out your schedule.

During VMworld, you will be able to add a session to your schedule up to an hour prior to the start. Session rooms will open approximately 25 minutes before the start of a session and close at the start of the session. Only attendees who have pre-registered for the session will be allowed in the room. There will be NO stand-by line, so please make sure to register for the sessions you plan on attending.

Hands-on Labs will be available on-demand and can be taken at any time throughout the event. You can add Lab time to your personal schedule, but will need to visit the Labs at VMworld to sign-up.

VMworld 2012 Excitement

I know it's only now March, but is anyone else getting excited about VMworld? This will be my 3rd yr. I have met so many amazing folks there - Steve Herrod, Duncan Epping, Frank Denneman, Tom Howarth, Jason Boche just to name a few.

I love SF and hope to do a couple extra things this yr I didn't get a chance to do in '10 - go to Sausalito, as well as do a 'fun run' over Golden Gate. If you have not had the opportunity to take a ferry ride around the Bay to Golden Gate and Alcatraz, I recommend doing so. It's awesome! Also, a 20 or so minute bus ride west all the way to the beach is recommended (well, not 'all' the way...there will be about another 10-12min walk). There is this neat restaurant there along the 'mile-long beach' (I think that's the actual name of the beach). Really cool atmosphere.

So, some of those things, meeting up with old friends, meeting new ones, "tweeting up", networking, sessions, & labs...yep, I'm ready for a great VMworld2012! Hope to see some of you there!

VMworld 2012 - back to San Francisco

Well guys, enjoy Las Vegas while you're here. Next year it's back poor service and lunch meat on a hard roll.

Rick Jackson says that Las Vegas can't handle such a massive event. Seriously? I know he's a marketing guy but between that one and explaining how great vRAM entitlements are for the customer I'm starting to get a little skeptical.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off.. (SF things to do)

So in the memory of John Hughes, I thought I would start with the famous quote from Ferris Bueller's day off"

"Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Here is my list of things I can think of that are pretty fun in the Bay Area, which would make a nice day off. I will try to list the time it would take to accomplish them, plus if you would need a car. I believe the cool thing about Ferris was the number of cool things he got done in one day off. =). For some of these, you will need a car, you can pick up a zip car in the morning and do some of the further away spots. Zip cars are great and rent by the hour, easy to pickup/drop off in various spots around SF. http://www.zipcar.com

1. Alcatraz - take a ferry to the small island which is now a state park, and do the audio tour. With headphones on walk the prison and hear sounds of prisoners cat calling you, bars clanking and a riot in the kitchen. They got old guards to tell stories as you walk through each sections. It is by far the best physical/virtual tour I've been on. Without the audio tour, Alcatraz is so so, but for the extra 5.00 it is amazing.

2. SF Maritime museum - A walking tour along the warf of old schooner sailing ships, 2 large ships, one cargo ship that has cargo in the hold with stations with audio/signs. Interesting to see how frieght was moved back in those days. This is an easy thing to see, they have 3-4 other big boats, and a few littler ones. A few blocks up, for another 10.00 you can take a tour of a WWII sub, with an audio tour. Again audio tours are worth ever cent.

3. Golden Gate Bridge - This one you would think is kinda standard, but really, the damn bridge is so impressive and the view so stunning, it's worth it to try and get this in. The nice thing about this one, is you can squeeze it whenever you have some time and a short taxi ride to the far side allows you to walk it back and then get a taxi back to the city. Wear something warm, the ocean is cool, and the wind strong, but you will like this one. There a small park at the far end of the bridge, a great drop off point and check out the redwood tree chunk. 4. Peir 39 Seals - Peir 39 is a tourist peir along the water, but the

interesting thng is, a herd of seals have for the past 10 years made

the docks at the end their home. They have a observation deck, and you

can just walk out and watch them do their thing. There are alwasy a few

of them jocking for control of a give dock.. 4-6 females will lay on a

section of dock, and a male will be their defending their dock

position. If you know what to watch, it's interesting to see a smaller

male circle and try to sometimes jump up on a dock that has a larger

5. SF Ocean Beach - Like all california beaches, the water is cold, the

waves are big and when the sun comes out you get warm and it's nice.

Best time to hit the beack is noon - 3:00, after that the warmth of the

sun starts to leave. Make a sand castle along the edge, and see how

long you can defend it before a few big waves win. Relaxing and always

something (surfers etc) to watch. The beach is a taxi ride from SF, so

you can get some nice ocean time in.

6. Muir Woods - If you like huge redwood trees, this one is a must. It's the nearest large redwood stand near SF, and it has nice paths to walks and a visitor center. You cet the feel of a large redwood forest when you walk it. It's free to walk and only about 45 minutes north of SF. If you don't want to drive a car, you can buy a ride on a tour bus to this place.

7. Jelly Belly factory tour - If you are wondering why I list this one, then this is probably not for you. =). But the factory is about 1 hour north and they give tours. It's interesting to see how they make them, and they give samples. Although if you have discover channel "how things are made" I guess factory tours are no longer needed, just watch it on the show. 8. Campus Walks: Stanford, UC Berkeley - I prefer stanford, its' just a

beatuful campus, and you can walk "this dish" and get a great

excercise. But, for the Berkeley guys, which I am also affilliated, I

need to mention them. But for me Berkeley ( a great comp-science

school) is less interesting a place to visit. But someone can post what

they like and I will edit this document. Ok.. Stanford tour: Walk the

places that Steve Jobs walks and hung out taking classes, see the hils

he walks and see where Mendall teaches at. (founder of VMware) . Things

to get in while doing stanford:

a. Walk on campus and make your way to the campus book store, its very big and beautiful. They sell Macs

b.Get food at the on campus pizza shop, just very yummy.

c. Walk west and up, find the "lake" and walk around it. It's west and up from the book shop. Ask someone.

d. If you are a hiking person, head south and west and find the

entrance to the "dish walk" and walk up to the huge Antenna dish, you

can see if from a lot of places and it's up on top of a hill that looks

down on the 280.

e. Make your way to "pete's coffee in the town and country mall, here

is where loads of VC's sit and discuss ideas. (I'm sitting here now

posting this) Get a free wifi code fromt he counter and surf while you

drink it. Town and country is about 1 block east of the Standord

stadium. (yes I went to stanford) . but also did work at Berkeley. =)

9. Best thing is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, excellent and special. But 2 hour drive south, but worth it.

If you have never done this one, you should if you have a day. Sea otters, right on the coast, and a

very cool town to walk around and get dinner.

10.. Giarahdelli Square, in SF near the marina muesum fudge sunday ice cream shop is excellent

11. SF Giants game downtown, look up the schedule, new stadium is pretty and just makes for a

great game. Wind tunnel tested to shelter people from windy SF. Don't do bleacher seats unless

you like wind.

12. Santa Cruz boardwalk, roller coasters, rides, beach.. 30.00 a day gets you an all day ride

pass 1.30 minute ride south

13. Just drive south along the coast road (highway 1 to santra cruz) the road and views are stunning.

Do that with number 12.

14. Napa wine tasting trip, head up to Napa and find some vineyards to visit and taste wine, there are plenty. Get a nice luch

in Napa. This is kinda low key, but if you love wine, you will like this. You can do this with Muir woods, as they are both in the

same direction.

20. VMware campus: Ok we will see how long this one stays up, I can imagine someone is going to tell me to take this item off the list. But, if you are totally into VMware, like i am, this one is kinda neat. It turns out Dianne Greene the founder of VMware really did live up to her last name. She built the VMware campus from scratch, and made it very very green. It's one of the prettyiest campus I've worked at. Maybe I will orgainze a tour, post if you are interested and I will get a count. Feature of the campus include vaulted natural lit areas, all glass walls that tranisition to outside, making being inside feeling like your outside. Built into the side of a hill, great to do this one, with the Stanford one since they are both within a mile of each other.

Hurricane Irene?!?!

Well even though my flight was scheduled to leave today from Newark Airport (ahead of the storm), it was cancelled, as well as all flights on Sunday. I might have a seat on a flight out on Monday.

Anyone know what provisions VMworld has for those of us who may not be able to make it? I realize the hotels are allowing changes/cancellations, etc but what happens with the conference fee? I really want to attend VMWorld but I'm a little concerned given these cancellations.

Hi,

We are one step closer to having all the sessions posted, the vendor shipped us a drive with all the captured sessions. We had over 280 cdroms that had to be loaded individually, and that was going too slow. Now that we have the sessions on a drive, we should be able to get them up on the site very quickly.

We also have all the pdfs now, and mp3's... which are now all on the same drive. I'm hoping to have all the content up this week.

So I'm looking at going to VMworld 2010 and the feedback I got from a coworker was that he didn't like VMworld in 2009. His complaint was that he didn't like that you needed to pre-register for the sessions (which I heard they fixed for this year) and he didn't like the way the labs were set up where you had to share with people. He felt like he didn't get a lot out of going to the conference.

I think our learning styles are a little different so I wanted to ask here for people that have been to it, what did you think of it? Was it valuable enough for you to go back to? What did you get out of going to the conference?

VMworld 2010 - Overall Impression

Let me start by saying that VMworld 2010 was my third time attending the conference - I attended the 2007 and 2009 conferences, obviously both were in San Francisco. I am yet to walk away feeling disappointed from any of these conferences, this year included. I must admit that I was a little worried about how the breakout sessions would go this year considering no pre-registration - while I did miss a couple of sessions because they were full by the time I got to the class (in some cases 30 minutes early), I will say that I still had a worthwhile conference. Obviously, we will all have access to all the presentations soon, but there is a certain degree of value in just 'being there' at a particular session. I do wish that VMware brings back pre-registration, but I won't let this stop me from attending a future conference if it doesn't happen.

I thought the lab setup was slick - while crowded at times, you have to admit that the lab staff did an amazing thing in terms of labs completed, VMs created, etc. That was impressive...

If I have a complaint, it would be this - the Solutions Exchange Welcome Reception was nearly impossible to navigate through on Monday night. Obviously with 17,000+ attendees, this was bound to happen. I didn't get a lot of value out of the reception Monday night, I ended up meeting a friend and we essentially hung out on the sidelines of the reception because it was just too packed. Not really sure how that can be addressed in the future..

The party - I had a blast - I really enjoyed that it was back at the Moscone Center again, makes it easy when you can walk back to your hotel and not have to hop a bus with 17,000 other people trying to get back to their hotels. I'm probably a little biased regarding the band because I love INXS - also really enjoyed Foreigner last year.

I was only able to take advantage of the hot meals one day this year, but I really appreciate their availability this year - I've never been a fan of the sandwich/side/apple/desert combo plate we were offered in years past so having fried chicken and biscuits (on Wednesday) was a welcome change.

So VMware, thank you for another conference - hopefully see you in Vegas in 2011!

I recently submitted a paper to speak at this year's VMworld, but I am a little confused as to how that relates to the registration process. If I end up not being selected, then I won't find that out until after the Early Bird registration is over, however, if I register now and am not selected to present then I won't find that out until after the deadline for 100% refund has passed. So, my question is, is there an exception for someone that has a paper accepted so that they can get a full refund after being notified?

In both labs I attended, the instructors were plugging ChipPC... Go to the booth, get a free Jack PC or Extreme PC (excuse me, Xtreme PC) thin client. Of course the booth was swamped and there was a paper sign-up sheet making the rounds through the mass of people.

Finally received my email and I should have known it was too good to be true... Here's the fine print:

"I acknowledge I will send a PO value zero from my company and credit card details to cover shipping & handling fees"

Hey now- nobody said anything about shipping and handling or purchase orders! WTH? If you're going to a venue like VMworld and advertise giving away free whatever, you better have the capacity to meet the demand- at least be up front about shipping costs. Dont know how many people knew this already. I just finished an email thread with the great folks over at certification@vmware.com aka EduOps. I asked about if there were any certifications I could get at VMworld 2011 and if so what site would I register under when I go on Pearson VUE. The anwser is they are not doing certs this year.

1) Does FT VMs required reserved hardware...such as CPU & Memory.

2) Does FT secondary VM required same resource as primary FT VM ( Example: 1CPU and 4 GB RAM )

3) Does second VM utilize the resources of its host in FT state

4) What if primary FT VMs fail and secondary VM's host doest not have enough resources to allocate as primary.

This year, I am leaving Denver for VMworld without a laptop. I will be bringing just my iPad "classic" and iPhone 3GS (even older yet). To help ease the pain from "fat-client" withdrawl, I have loaded VMware View client for iPad and bought a Bluetooth keyboard to retain at least a virtual tether to my Windows 7 virtual desktop at the office. I just hope I can learn to function well enough without a mouse to make it through Thursday...

Is anyone else planning to go this minimalist route at VMworld? I would be interested in hearing your plans, what thin client/tablet enpoints you will be utilizing, and how you will be using VMware View to tie back into your corporate cloud infrastrcture to remain as functional as possible.

The Coffee Booths are way too expensive

After checking in yesterday, the only coffee I saw was being sold by a vendor in a booth there on the lower floor fo Moscone South. They claimed to sell Startbucks coffee, so I asked for my usual venti cup of bold. First of all, they did not know what I was talking about. Then I finally got someone else to tell me they sold Starbucks coffee, but did not have the Starbucks cups, just small and large and they only had regular, not bold. So I asked for two shots of espresso to go in the large coffee. They put the espresso in a tiny cup and charged me $4.25. I repeated my order for the espresso in the large coffee and they wanted to charge me another $2.50 for the coffee, so I just left.

I went to a real Starbucks later on at the Yerba Buena next door to the convention. They sell the venti bold for $1.90 and $.65 for each shot of espresso. If you want just espresso, it is $1.65 for the first shot and like $1.90 for two. Later, I foune that VMware was nice enough to have free Starbucks coffee outside the breakout sessions. I will not patronize the Moscone Center coffee vendor again.

Netbook VMware Image?

Hi,

I'm trying to create VMware images of a Netbook which can be run on 'normal' desktop PCs. I've tried creating VM images on a desktop and then manually tweaking the screen size and resolution settings to match that of a Netbook but, when passed to other users, the image renders at a default size and resolution on the end users machine.

Does anyone know if there's a way to create or take an image of a Netbook which can be run on any other type of PC, rendering at the same screen size and resolution as on the Netbook itself? It's literally just the correct screen size I'm after, I don't need to worry about the actual OS or specs apart from this.

All Flights Cancelled...How can I cancel?

OK, so on the FAQ section, there's a general way to cancel, states "via email" but nowhere lists an email address. In fact, there is NO WAY LISTED to contact anyone from VM world.

If you want to ignore us here on the east coast and take our 1500 bucks, that's fine. But it will be something that I consider when evaluating VM infrastructure in my company.

It's a rather large hurricane, and you should do something other than send out the phone numbers for your three hotels in an email.

How to decrease the size of your Virtaul Disk?

I have a question about decreasing the size of an existing VM's hard disk VMFS.

I converted a physical server to VM by using VMware Converter.

I have re-sized the partition using a partitioning tool but unable to decrease the size of the physical disk under Intrastructure Client.

While i know how to increase the disk, im unable to decrease the size.

Can anyone assist.

Im using Intrastructure client and not Virtual Center.

VMware ESX 3.5 Server.

With VMWorld now expanding from the Venetian into the Wynn, I was wondering if anyone has any tips for navigating VMWorld. I am very familiar with Vegas and Casino's, but looking for tips on VMWare conference layout and tips for navigating the conference.

Is it more important to stay on track with scheduled courses, or is it better to break out to vendor booths and catch a missed class online at a later time?
Is there a better time during the week to hit vendor booths?
Any vendor booths you would recommend?
Are hands on lab's recommended?
Is conference wi-fi even usable?

Any tips or direction is appreciated.

Proving Business Worth of VMWORLD

I work for a pretty small organization of 45 employees. We are a community bank in Kansas. I am looking for some resources on proving the value to my extremely conservative boss. He is the president of the bank and has been for a long time and has gone from no computers to virtual servers. It is easy to convince them of savings on money they would spend anyway. Hard to convince them on conferences not related to banking.

Any help would be much appreciated.

So, building off Bob's post from September (http://communities.intel.com/openport/thread/1905), I contend that, at least from a performance perspective, with the new capabilities in the next generation of virtualized infrastructure coming this year, the answer is yes!

As we look at the availability of ESX 4.0 from VMWare and servers based on the Intel Nehalem-based Xeon servers with new VT features for CPU, chipset and IO later this year, we're not seeing any of the mainstream applications that can't be virtualized. In the past, some of the mainstream apps that (allegedly) couldn't be virtualized that we've consistently heard are SAP and other complex business processing apps, middle sized databases and large enterprise email systems like Microsoft Exchange. While it's a little early to declare victory, we're thinking the next generation of technology will be more than good enough to run these workloads in most environments. We're currently running testing on the lastest generation infrastructure software and not seeing any reason why most of these apps won't be capable of being virtualized over the next couple of years.

Anyone think differently? Why?

Note, other issues remain:

Even if I don't run the applications on the same physical server as other applications, is the virtual infrastructure secure and reliable enough to support these important applications?
And, if I try to consolidate the app with other apps, can I be guaranteed that the app won't interfere or be interfered with by other apps. Interference could be either unintentional resource contention or intential security attacks.
Do I have the tools and support infrastructure to do such a critical application in a virtual infrastructure.

I'm making no claims on whether these particular challenges have been solved but I would be interested in whether they are real issues for you.

Host connection failure - ESX, 4.0.0, 360236

I have been having a very pecular issue with ESX servers with dual 10G NC522SFP and quad NC382i GB adaptors.

VMKernal ports are all setup in the 10G dual NIC (NFS, Service Console, vMotion) - with trunked backend on Cisco 7000 Nexus cores. So by design, network contencion should not be an issue.

The Quad ports are used as failover for vSwitch0 - which are setup Route based on the originating virtual port ID for load balancing and beacon probing for failover detection.

I was wondering if this is a known issue and what the resolution might be?

Hello!

Has anybody attempted to run Microsoft Dynamics AX (Axapta) in a virtual environment? We had tried to virtualize several Axapta app servers but ran into some apparent network issues where the app would time out if the network was "slow" or missed a ping. Our network team has signed off that the network is OK - a given server (physical or virtual) will miss a ping occasionally, but nothing they deem significant . But we were forced to V2P the Axapta app servers because of lingering "app issues".

This is as much politics as anything else, but I'm curious if anyone else has run this app in a VM and their experiences. The versions of Axapta we are running are very old (v2.5 & v3.0), which I'm sure isn't helping, but of course they are highly customized with no plans for upgrade/replacement.

For those of you who showed up to try to win the Segway at a certain booth will know what I am talking about. They handed out these orange shirts when you signed up for their drawing for a Segway and said you had to be present Thursday at 2:00 pm wearing your shirt to win. When everyone showed up they kept emphasizing that you had to be wearing a shirt and were telling people to put them on. Then when they drew the person's name for the Segway he wasn't wearing the shirt. The crowd starting booing him so he tried to start putting his shirt on. The crowd yelled together at the company representatives to draw another name since he didn't follow the rules. Despite much booing and crowd outrage the company respresentatives decided to break the rules they had repeated over and over and give the guy the Segway. The crowd was furious. Then immediately you saw about 90% of the people in the crowd take off their shirts and throw them at the Falconstor booth. It was the funniest sight ever seeing so many orange t-shirts flying through the air. Talk about marketing dollars down the drain.

Opening Doors To Storage Virtualization

I thought I would post this discussion with the aim of getting some good feedback from end-users on their thoughts, experiences and opinions relating to Storage Virtualization. I may regret this discussion later on as it is a fairly loaded question.

I guess the reason I'm opening this up to floor is that I come across many end-users who still have reservations regarding Storage Virtualization, and for the most part I'm noticing that when you dig deeper concerns are more related to not fully understanding the technology and it's pro's or cons.

Complete disappointment with the session list just released!

Earlier this year VMWare notified all Lab manager users that the product was being discontinued and we need to migrate to vCloud Director if we wished to continue with a service contract. I expected many sessions at the 2011 VMWorld conference to assist in this endeavor. To my disappointment there are only 4 to 5 sessions directly relating the vCloud Director. I did filter the sessions and review descriptions relating to infrastructure but only identified a couple more sessions that pertained to this product.

Since vCloud Director is replacing Lab Manager I had hoped that there would be sessions that demonstrate how we can best manage the migration and then utilize the new features. I will be able to attend other sessions that may be of use or interest but I am disappointed none the less.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Unfortunately the HP Mini Netbook doesn´t boot up. The Display stays black. I will try to search for the reason myself. But if I have to use the warrenty I will probably some kind of "Bill" or something like that.

We are a group of 13 students at the conclusion of our study on the Faculty of Computer and Information Science from Slovenia (Europe) and we are supported by the Dean of our faculty and Slovenian IT companies. Our plan is to come to Silicon Valley and visit some of the IT companies and startups, with the intention to gather new knowledge, get an impression about the working atmosphere there, get familiar with the lifestyle of people and expand our social network. I am trying to install esx 4.1(downloaded the ISO from Vmware and then made Cd using NERO) and while it reaches to the point where it asks to load the additional drivers like NIC. I put the driver CD of NIC(qlogic Vmware supported) but it is not shown by clicking 'ADD' rather it gives message "The CD provided is not a valid VMWARE ESX SERVER driver CD". I went to the command mode issued the command ls -l /dev/cdrom but it says no such directory, please help I am very new to VMware. command such as EJECT also says /dev/cdrom no such a file or directory. Why the CDROM is not mounted while it is booted from the CD OR what is the reason of the message"The CD provided is not a valid VMWARE ESX SERVER driver CD".

api for unsupported RAID array

The servers we are using with esxi have an unsupported RAID array and was wondering if we could create an API to fix the problem we are having with this raid array. I am desperate and we need a solution to fix our issue. The server works but we need to make it so the people in the field can setup it up with out dealing with a certain complication we have with the RAID. Basically the RAID does not see the virtual drive it sees both drives and sometimes works when you install it and sometimes it does not work. We need to make it so that ESXi sees one virutal drive and installs into that drive. Please let me know if this is possible at all

Yesterday, myself along with Motti Beck and Ali Ayoub (our main VMware software developer at Mellanox) diligently put together a very compelling demo that highlights the convergence capabilities of our BridgeX BX 4000 gateway that we announced last week.

We unpacked everything and got it all up and running in less than an hour (this after we sorted out the usual power and logistical issues that always comes with having a booth).

The slide illustrates the topology of the demo. Essentially, we have two ConnectX adapters cards in one of the Dell server running two different interconnect fabrics. One adapter is running 40Gb/s InfiniBand, while the other adapter is running 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

1. The 40Gb/s InfiniBand adapter is connected to our MTS3600 40Gb/s InfiniBand switch which then passes through the BridgeX BX4020 where we convert the packets to Ethernet. The packets then run through the Arista 10GigE Switch and then into the LeftHand Appliance Virtual Machine which resides on the Dell Server (which is running ESX 3.5 and our certified 10GigE driver over our ConnectX EN 10GigE SFP+ adapter). We are showing a movie from the iSCSI storage on the IB end-point (the Dell Linux Server).

2. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter connects directly to the BridgeX BX4020 where it converts the traffic to FC (effectively FCoE). The traffic then moves to the Brocade Fibre Channel switch and then directly to the NetApp storage. We are showing a movie from the FC NetApp storage on the 10GigE end-point (the Dell Linux Server).

The conference being in Las Vegas is cool and all, but the ratio of people to space is rediculous. The coference rooms are too small, the hallways are too crowded, and people lined up for sessions is stopping traffice. How rediculous. Whoever planned this thing should be "taken out" old Vegas style. They were not even going to let me in a session because it was over capacity. How is that my fault? I paid to be able to sit confortably in any seat in any session at any given time. Now Microsoft TechEd knows how to have a conference and its on the scale of 60000 people. There are always snacks and stuff in the halls when the sessions are over....you never go thirsty or hungry. I have yet to see that kind of setup here. The sessions and hallways were NEVER overcrowded. I am VERY disapointed so far. I hope you all agree as well. Where can we go to complain?

Firing Up VMware - Q&A with Robin Bloor - Analyst/Blogger and Joe Jakubowski - Sr. Engineer Virtualization Performance at IBM

There’s a common perception in the server market-place that there’s little to distinguish the x86 commodity servers from the various server vendors. After all, they tend to use commodity components, build similar mother boards and then slide them into servers or blades. I discussed this view of the x86 server world with Joe Jakubowski, a Senior Engineer with IBM who leads IBM’s System x virtualization performance team. The conversation focused on virtual servers and their deployment. The following is an edited transcript of the conversation.

Bloor: So, with VMware deployments how is IBM’s System x different from the competition?

Jakubowski: IBM has been doing server consolidation for decades and has carried out many server consolidation studies for its customers. From these studies we understand the hardware utilization characteristics of the workloads that customers want to consolidate. We understand the workload type; email server, database server, file/print server and so on. We also understand the average and peak CPU, average and peak memory footprint, disk i/o and network i/o. From that we can develop profiles of these workloads and that give us a yardstick by which we can meaningfully characterize virtualization performance. From these profiles we can work out how many of these workloads can be virtualized on the same host.

Bloor: So how does that contribute to System x server design?

Jakubowski: One of the things that stood out from our analysis was that memory capacity is frequently a bottleneck in virtualization deployments. If you take a server that has two processors and only twelve DIMM slots it tends to run out of memory capacity before it runs out of cpu. So IBM has differentiated itself as a solutions vendor by tackling the memory capacity issue on a virtualization host. We’ve tackled that in two ways. One is to have more physical DIMMs, but a few other vendors have also done that.

The other way is that with our Intel Nehalem EX processor solutions we provide our MAX5 memory expansion drawer. On our two processor and four processor rack products we use QPI links from the Intel processors themselves to attach the memory expansion drawer. This provides 8 additional memory channels and 32 additional DIMM slots. In effect, on two processor servers with 32 DIMM slots in the server we can increase the memory capacity by 100 percent. Through our proprietary silicon we also have 8 additional memory channels, which means we have a memory controller in our MAX5 memory box. That’s a major differentiation.

And by the way, it may also boost the performance of some non-virtualized workloads such as high-end OLTP database applications.

Bloor: Do none of the other vendors do anything like this?

Jakubowski: Not in the way that IBM has done it. The only thing even close to it is what CISCO has done with their Unified Computing System. It’s a totally different approach. They don’t use QPI links. It’s limited to their Nehalem EP products and only in the two sockets space. What UCS does is if you look at the 3 memory channels that come off each EP processor what they have done is they have added what I call a “mux buffer” that multiplexes 4 DDR3 subchannels on each memory channel and expands it from 3 DIMMS to 8 DIMMs. They get memory expansion through a different type of architecture, but it’s limited to their EP products. And with CISCO UCS you have to add processor sockets to scale memory capacity. With IBM’s QPI-based method of memory expansion, it is not necessary to add processor sockets to scale memory capacity.

If you study Intel products and the memory RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) characteristics of the EP line versus the EX line, the EX line has vast superiority in memory RAS features. If you’re a customer and you want to expand memory capacity, you should be concerned about memory RAS features. I would choose the EX processor family over the EP processor family every time.

Bloor: It occurs to me that this “memory starvation problem” is only going to get worse in terms of each new generation of processors having more cores than the previous one. Is that right?

Jakubowski: You’re correct. But you have also to look at memory technology itself. If you observe what’s happened over recent years with memory technology going from megabit to a gigabit to two gigabit and now four gigabit technology, what we’ve seen is some correlation between processor power, memory DRAM technology and memory footprint. Memory footprint doubles on about a 3 year cycle as does DRAM technology density. So we may go from an 8 core to a 16 core processor but memory is almost keeping pace. This helps mitigate some of the problem, but it doesn’t solve it all.

Looking to the future, IBM regards the memory expansion drawer as today’s solution. We’re looking at other approaches. We’re always looking to innovate.

Bloor: So how savvy are the buyers of x86 servers. How much technical knowledge do they really have of this kind of issue? My impression is that not many do.

Jakubowski: Customers certainly know that memory capacity is a potential bottleneck in a virtualization deployment so it’s an easy conversation to have with customers. It’s especially the case when they don’t want to pay a premium for 8 or 16 gigabyte DIMMs. If they want to stick with 2 gigabyte or 4 gigabyte DIMMs, we can provide them with 32 extra DIMM slots We can provide a solution that avoids them having to go to 8 gigabyte DIMMs at all. So that soon becomes a total-cost-of-ownership discussion.

It becomes a question of “Can I lower my cost per VM if I go with this memory expansion route?”

Bloor: Is this memory expansion capability only on rack servers or does it apply to all of the x86 line of servers?

Jakubowski: It’s on all our Nehalem EX based solutions. So our 2 socket x3690 X5 and 4 socket x3850 X5, and also a blade called HX5, but the memory expansion there is 24 DIMM slots not 32.

Bloor: OK. Thanks for your time and for increasing my understanding of so-called commodity servers.

Dear All,

I recently installed VMware ESXi 4.0 and hot cloned a Poweredge Dell 800 (2 DCs) and 2600 (1 File server) using VMware converter 4.0 but when I power on the VM they all shut down by themself, I have disabled some adpters including the NIC but still the same thing.

I also tried ESXi 3.5 and VMware converter 3.0 with similar results. These servers have reached its end of life and needs to be retired since one of the drives failed once.

Please any link, suggestions on how to fix these will be highly appreciated.

I am having some challenges doing a PXE installation of esx4i in a statefull manner. The boot process loops with the error "Fatal: Cannot read image.tgz".

I have set up a new vSphere server and I want to create a virtual from a physical system. The server is on one network, the server it is on has two network cards. I want to move my email server which sits in my DMZ. Can I set the 2nd nic on vmware server to the DMZ and virtualize the mail server? I know there is a program that allows this but I was not sure if I can have two networks on the same machine. Thank you

I am using vSphere4 on 6 to 7 host and vSphere5 on one of host. I am think vSphere5 is conflicting with QNAP and its also effecting others host on vSphere4.

I am using the partialy storage on NAS and ISCSI.

can someone guide me...that i am approching right towards issue.? if is´t really a conflict of vSphere and NAS then someone has tried any solution?

so i've never been to VMworld before. i signed up, payed for it, and FU**ING nobody told me i actually had to register for lab sessions, and now they're all full. Yeah, I'm very sorry i didn't flick through a zillion postings in this forum to find out, all my fault. thanks a bunch. just a small note together with the confirmation email or invoice stating that prior reservation was necessary would have been sufficient, but no, vmware lets people find out the hard way.

i'm paying almost 2 grand just to find out that all the interesting lab sessions are already taken. that's just great.

Is it possible to use the Linux kernel netfilter utilities in conjunction with the ESX hypervisor?

I want to insert a Kernel Loadable Module, that leverages off netfilter capabilities, that will change the behavior of the hypervisor's network stack. It will register a nefilter hook and then ACCEPT, DROP, STEAL, etc....

VMWare ESXi installation CD failure - Error code 22

We are trying to install ESXi and are having absolutely no joy whatsoever. We have now tried the download and installation on four different computers (two PCs, one running Windows 2000, one running Windows XP, and two laptops, one running Windows XP and the other running Windows Vista). In all cases, we get through the process as far as the part where you have to insert a CD and click "Download & Install", after which it comes up with a message saying "Downloading and creating ESXi installation media...", and you are asked to select your disc drive and then click "Burn ISO".

There is where it all goes wrong. On three of the machines, this results in a message saying "not enough space on the drive to burn the file", and on the Vista machine it results in a message saying "Error code 22 returned". We have tried everything we can think of and have completely run out of ideas. There is a post on the main VMWare community forum from last autumn about this exact problem, which has never received a resolution (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/229404, for anyone who is interested).

We have tried two different types of CDs (definitely CDs, not DVDs), but both result in the same outcome.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Its pretty irritating that at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco we were told, "Don't worry, the slidedecks will be available later". So my notes were more concentrated on information not on the slides. Now it appears that I will have to watch a video to capture the information that was in the slide decks.

Lab Manager vs. Workstation - for developers

First off I'm fairly new to VMware solutions so I might just not seen the whole picture. What I'm after is more managing of the VMware Workstation brilliance in SnapShot views and debugging capabilities. And where hoping VMware Lab Manager would give me the possibility to create a more widely use of VM's instead of just a single person as with the Workstation, And let the whole team in on it. But there is no built in views of the clone diversions, plus there is no connection between Visual Studio. How would you do this or is it possible with Lab Manager? (LiveLink)

Asked some similar questions on VMware.com but didn't get the answers I where looking for, and surely no discussion around it. There seems to be more views here at VMworld.com so I give it a new shoot with some other angles to the question.

vlans with one network card

Hi there,

just installed esxi 4 u1 on an ABIT K8N SLI mobo with onboard network. we plan to use vlans on this interface, we have HP procurve vlan switch(which is connected and has vlans activated)

the question is: Is it possible to use vlans with virtual machines on the esxi host ? we have 3 vlans, #1 for host management via VMware vSphere, the others should be connected to the virual machines.

what has been tried:

tagged all three vlans on the port from the hp procurve switch, and set host interface vlan 4095(to see all vlans), the host cannot be connected to with static ip, does not get the dchp.

tagged vlan 2 and 3, untagged vlan 1 for management, host gets ip from dhcp and can be managed

tried to assign vlan to vm network, cannot get ip nor static works.

when assigning vlan to a vm kernel it does gets ip from vlan-nework(2 or 3), but kernel cannot be assign to a vm-machines..

please assist,

any would be really appreciated.

Seeking room to share for VMworld San Francisco 2012

Last year I paid my own way to VMworld, and i ran out of annual leave, so the week of VMworld, i had to take as leave without pay! As much as I would love to go back this year, i don't think i can afford it.. unless, i can make some savings.

I figured there's 20,000 people there, surely some people must have rooms big enough to share, or some hotels have the same price for a room with 1 bed or 2 beds.

If you are feeling generous, you could book a room with 2 beds, and help myself and others make it there this year.

non smoker.. I don't mind a few beers, but the content at VMworld is too valuable to miss with a hangover.

Flying from Australia to SF, i'd be spending more time on a plane than i would in the room!

I know the VMware community is pretty awesome, so don't let me down.

My email addresses have been different each time because of relocation and domain changes by my company. I've called them 5 times and they've promised to take care of the issue each time. Hi all, This is to those that have been to VMworld before.

I noticed that in a lot of the photos from previous events there are people who seem to be inside the seminars with their laptops... what's the benefit of carting my laptop around? Ignoring the bit about checking work emails etc, and taking notes (I can use one of those ancient things called a pencil and paper for that... who knows, my handwriting may get better from it too!)

Any thoughts?

VMware ESX Backup Options

Judging by the fact that you are reading this thread you have either implemented VMware or are considering it and are wondering what options are available for backing up your virtual machines. Below is a quick (slightly biased) summary of some the options that are available for backing up your VMs and some of the pros and cons of each. It is obviously up to you what solution makes the most sense based on your specific needs or budget but the following should at least give you a framework for thinking about your options.

1. Use your existing backup software to backup each VM. While this seems a logical method, one of the benefits of virtualizing your servers is to get a way from the old way of doing things - namely buying hardware and software for each server instance. By using a dedicated backup agent for each VM you will incur costs and licensing hassles every time you add a virtual machine. In addition, backup is a very resource consuming process. Running multiple backup agents on each VM can put a heavy load on your ESX server and may slow down critical applications. Our company Idealstor offers a backup solution that is licesed per server instance. Most of our clients will use this as they migrate to having all of their servers virtualized or to backup servers that they plan on leaving on the network. http://www.idealstor.com/ibac.html

2. Use VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB). VCB comes with any paid version of VMware and if you are using ESXi it can be downloaded as a trial from vmware.com. VCB requires scripting and a lot of patience/time to get decent backups going. Most companies will use a combination of their existing backup software and VCB to get a mix of file level backups and full VM backups.

3. Use a VMware specific backup solution. Typically these solutions are licensed per ESX host and let you easily backup and recover your VMs. Keep an eye out for companies that charge per VM or per processor but also for companies that insist you use their file level backup software and their VMware product in tandem - more products will probably mean more licensing costs.

Our VMware backup - iBac Virtual Infrastructure Proxy (iBac VIP - http://www.idealstor.com/VIP.html) is licensed per ESX host or per VMware Virtual Center. The option that is licensed per host lets you backup any number of VMs without charging you for the number of processors running on that host server. As mentioned, iBac VIP is also licensed per Virtual Center and in this case there is no additional charge per VM, processor or ESX host. iBac VIP ties into VCB and will allow you to backup an entire VM and recover at the file level or recover an entire server.

I have client who has headquarter and 5 branches. In every branch there are 3 hosts ( 2 dual proces. & 1 single proces). He wants to control them from the headquarter through virtualization. I suggest Vshere 5 essentials plus kit Retail and branches and One vCenter Standard to manage all branches from the headquarter.He wants mainly HA and vMotion features. But this solution is so expensive. If there is another solution that he can reach his target, please suggest.

So I am trying to size this product and I would like to get some feedback from all the avamar users out there. What type of reduction ratios are you getting. For example if I want to protect 20TB of Windows and Linux servers how much storage in the avamar solution do I need?

What type of change rates are you all getting?

What do I need to watch out for?

What do you do with VMs with large data drives > 500Gb or so. ? Do you just back those up with the VM as well.

Best Practices for vSphere 4.(1) on UCS

Good Morning,

I come from previous VMWare/ESX experience, and that experience has always been with ESX hosts on stand-alone servers. I am getting ready to do a migration from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4.1 on Cisco UCS hardware. My current ESX host configuration is made up of multiple 1GB and 10GB ethernet adapters (4x1GB for vMotion, Service Console, Guest Networks), and (2x10GB for Storage - NFS backended). While this is a good model, I want to know what is the BEST approach when going forward with Cisco UCS.

I know that our new UCS chassis will come with 10Gb interconnect modules, and also has the ability to carve out virtualized adapters for the ESX hosts. I want to know, if in UCS world -- it is better to use multiple virtualized 1GB adapters to segment VMWare protocols as I did in ESX 3.5 (with all the active-standby uplinks, etc). Or is it better to go with just 2x10GB interfaces and not segment the various VMWare type traffic? Or is there an even better way to take advantage of the new UCS networking? Another change for us, is that we're dropping NFS and going to HBAs for storage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am exploring the possibilities of installing SAP ECC and SAP Netweaver on two 64bit virtual machines on the same host server, and that after both machines could talk/ interchange data between them via RFC/ Idocs.

Since I am novice in the virtualization at that level, I would like if anybody could give me some advice on which product I should use for that, since I am overwhelmed by the vast range of VMWare products.

I believe VMware vSphere should be a good option, but I am not sure if two virtual machines created in vSphere could communicate between them via RFC or if I would need for that any additional product like Sphere server...

could it be SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for VMware an option?

The purpose of that installation is a training system, so it will not be a heavy duty system.

I would be grateful if I could receive any guidance or if somebody could share some experiencies.

an ESX host is setup. i installed two nodes on it (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Ed.). when i go to install SQL Server 2008 failover cluster, i get the following error:

Rule "Cluster shared disk available check" failed.
The cluster on this computer does not have a shared disk available. To continue, at least one shared disk must be available.

what's wrong? it seems that a virtual SAN is required. for this purpose i setup StarWind on the virtual domain controller (the 3rd, indeed the 1st vm) and may access it via the 2nd vm (first node). but the problem exists.

what can i do?

VM automatically shuts down after P2V

Dear All,

I recently installed VMware ESXi 4.0 and hot cloned a Poweredge Dell 800 (2 DCs) and 2600 (1 File server) using VMware converter 4.0 but when I power on the VM they all shut down by themself, I have disabled some adpters including the NIC but still the same thing.

I also tried ESXi 3.5 and VMware converter 3.0 with similar results. These servers have reached its end of life and needs to be retired since one of the drives failed once.

Please any link, suggestions on how to fix these will be highly appreciated.

What is vSphere PowerCLI ?
vSphere PowerCLI is a set of snapins based on Windows PowerShell that provide administration and automation for VMware vSphere. vSphere PowerCLI ships with over 200 commandlets (pre-built commands) to help administrators manage vSphere.

What can you do with vSphere PowerCLI ?
vSphere PowerCLI is built on the vSphere API. As a general rule you can do most things with PowerCLI than you can with the vSphere Client. This means that you can script common tasks to help you save time.

To achieve HA in ESXi one requires vCenter, correct?..........Wrong! not anymore.

By the end of September 2011 StorMagics SvSAN VSA will be providing High Vailability for VMware environments without the need for vCenter, not only is SvSAN very affordable the additional HA functionality will be a standardized feature.

What this means now is that High Availability will be achievable on FREE versions of ESXi as well as ESXi Essentials.

I just got kicked out of my registered lab!?!

Just got an email from VMworld saying they overbooked the LAB04 (Monday afternoon) so they kicked me out of it. Didn't put me at the top of a waiting list for it, nothing. I'm just out.

As a consolation they suggested I try 3 alternative labs they've added seats to. One isn't offerred on Monday at all and the others are for products I don't even own. Since the email wasn't repliable and there was no phone number to contact I thought I'd start here and vent a little before tracking down a number to call. This is ridiculous. They overbook a lab and fix it by opening seats in other labs!?

A lot of other people getting this email today as well?

CPU Ready is going high

One VM with Win2k3 with IIS always hung and i found that CPU ready utilization is going high. Previously that VM configured with 4 CPU then I removed 2 CPU , its work fine for hour and again CPU Ready utilization is going high (more than 20%). Please suggest me for solution.

I am using VMWare fusion on my Mac - I'm trying to enter an array function in excel, and the only way to evaluate the function is to type 'control+shift+enter'. However, when I hit this combination of keys, nothing happens. I've added this key combination in the Preferences of VMWare. But... still no luck. Ackkk! Help?
