4th day at VMworld 2008

Posted by Marko Merl Sep 19, 2008

The first session was about implementing data protection for apps. It is unbelievable but all what this subject needs is the new version of VCB what will come out in 2009. It\s also possible than to backup apps and to restore VMs very easily.

The second session was about DPM - distributed power management. A very great thing! With DPM is it possilbe to save power costs, because the DPM will bring ESX hosts into standby mode and also in online mode back again. The configuration of this tool is not so difficult but it works great! You can save money up to 73% per year!

3rd day at VMworld 2008

Posted by Marko Merl Sep 19, 2008

The first session was an interesting story how a VMware infrastructure works at a casino. Very interesting was the whole infrustructe (e.g. network, storages, etc.).

The second session was about VCB. I learned there some new functions what will come in the next version of VCB in 2009. I just can say that the companies what are selling backup solution should be careful what they will do. The new generation of VCB includes all this stuff what you need to make backups in different methods (e.g. host based, VM based, etc.). Also a nice GUI will be available in this version.
But one point was very important, it is recommed to upgrada all ESX to 3.5u2, because in the current new version of VCB is VSS supported. That is needed to backup MS SQL/Exchange servers without any errors ;-).

The third session was like the second, but with more troubleshooting informations.

2nd day at VMworld 2008

Posted by Marko Merl Sep 16, 2008

The first session today was the general session with the CEO of VMware. It was very interesting to hear about some goals of VMware in the future.
The primary part of that is the VDI. They will concentrate a lot of time into the VDI, especially to have 3D support in the VDI.
For the server site, they will investigate to support virtually application pools and to have one centralized management station for the whole infrastructure.

The second session was about Fault Tolerant VMs in VI. It was interesting, for sure. But it was just on a high level, so there was not many to keep with me.

The third session was about virtually Windows under Mac with Fusion. I will say the truth, the subject didn't met the content of that session. There was nothing about Mac! It was like a Q&A session.

The fourth and for me very interesting session was about Virtual Infrastructure troubleshooting & faults. It was so boring, the speaker in front of us didn't know what he was talking about it.He was just reading from the slides and all of them was a part of the VCP.

1st day at VMworld 2008

Posted by Marko Merl Sep 16, 2008

The first session was the Lab05. It was ok, but there were no new things for me. All what we did there, I already did it at the VCP.

The second session was Hypervisors - understandig the differences. This session was also on a high level content but there were some good points in it which shows the contrast between VMware, Microsoft and one other VM software. It also told me that VMware is much cheeper when you have a middle sized datacenter.
The biggest edge is that you don't have any downtimes when you have to updating, repairing or something like that, one of the host in your ESX cluster

The third session was also a lab - Lab04. What I heared about it wasn't new for me. It was also on a high level and a lot of them I heared about the VCP. What was new was the exactly definition what the CPU Ready graph is.

The fourth session was about VI SDK applications. It wasn't possible for me to join in, because there were something wrong at the online VMworld 2008 scheduler. This session was just for prefered partners. So there was no information at the scheduler. I already made some trouble at one of the VMware registration guy ;-), but didn't help!

Today I spent the whole day for sightseeing Las Vegas at the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard).
-Shopping Malls (Miracle Mile Shops, Fashion Show Shopping Mall)
-Hotels & Casinos (Treasure Island, Palazzo, Mirage, Venetian)
-Food (American Pizza Kitchen, MC Donald's ;-), ABC Store)

The shopping malls are so big, that is unbeliveable.I need 2 hours for 2 floors of 6. So I will need only 2 days for one shopping mall, that\s amazing!

The flight from L.A. to Las Vegas takes only 45 minutes. But the way from the airport to the hotel was terrible. I thought I will drive with the shuttle buses because it is cheeper (that's true), but the shuttle picks everyone up at the airport and then he will drive to all hotels. My hotel was one of the latest. So I hab 1 hour bus driving. The good thing was I had, with that action, a little sightseeing!

Now I am in Las Vegas! Landed yesterday, 2008-09-13 at 00:03 am. After checking in in one of the greatest hotel in Las Vegas, Treasure Island, I was happy that I have a bed for sleeping smile.

Dear Blog readers,

now I am on the air port in Los Angeles. The current local time is 08:20 pm in the evening. My flight starts at 01:30 pm in UTC +02:00 time zone (Austria-Carinthia-Klagenfurt) and now I am in the time zone UTC -06:00.

The flight from Klagenfurt to Munich was not so breathtaking (just a short flight with a small plane and a fast meal), but the second flight from Munich to Los Angeles (with an AirBus A360-600) was more then funny and interesting (2 warm meals, a lot of snacks and drinks, friendly board stuff, clean toiletts, own monitor/tv with a lot of choices (films, serials, music videos and so on)).

I also had an 'flight partner', Calin. It was so funny with him, he is near 80 years old andfully fit http://www.vmworld.com/vmworld/images/emoticons/wink.gif. Durring the flight we talked about all topics of the world and it was very interesting!

So, now I have 12h 20min flight behind me. I am a little bit tired.
Now I have to wait 2h 30min for the last flight to Las Vegas!

Here are some pictures what I took on the flights...
-glight partner Calin
-black booting screen on Windows CE for onboard TV smile
-the fist food on the flight to Los Angeles
-second food on that flight
-food on the flight to Munich
