Disaster recovery is crucial to your business. A combination of Double-Take for Windows and our newest product, Livewire, make it easier than ever to protect and recover your organizations entire infrastructure. These products provide a complete recovery solution for both primary and secondary workloads in a cost effective and simple way without the pain and hassle of dealing with other methods like tape.

Join this technical session to discuss:

  • The recovery challenge that most IT organizations face: How to make sure systems are up and running as quickly after any kind of outage while staying within budget.
  • An in-depth technical look at Livewire, which allows you to protect and recover those secondary (or tier 2) systems that haven't made the priority list in the past.
  • How virtualization platforms like VMware ESX can be leveraged as a recovery platform and how Livewire makes it easy to recover into a VM.
  • A look at how Livewire "on demand" recovery can be augmented with real-time replication and failover from Double-Take to safeguard critical applications like Exchange and SQL.

Please join the experts from Double-Take Software for this free webinar to learn some new ways to dynamically move, protect, and recover workloads across any combination of physical and virtual server environments with minimal downtime.

These are some interesting statistics from a survey conducted by Double-Take Software and Storage Expo in the UK and picked up on tradingmarkets.com. I think the most compelling stat is that 52% will be adopting virtualization to help manage and reduce costs which just confirms the growth of the virtualization market will remain strong for sometime.

Key findings include overwhelming interest in virtualisation, with 38% of respondents having already virtualised their production infrastructure and 52% having plans to do so. Increased infrastructure flexibility was cited as the main benefit of adopting virtualisation (48%), followed by cost reduction (21%). However, beyond these core factors, improved disaster recovery is widely considered a key additional benefit of virtualisation, with 82% stating that it is a significant feature.

A few years ago virtual migrations needed significant planning, design and downtime required with converting a physical machine to a virtual image, and once the virtual image was converted it was possible that it may be missing any changes that occurred once the conversion process began.

This is the typical migration paradigm: how do you do one without impacting the other? You can't exactly keep the systems online during the migration and not expect users to access and change the data. And you can't make the systems unavailable to the users (to ensure the data hasn't changed once the conversion process starts).

A real-time replication engine will help to keep changes up-to-date until you pick a time when you are ready to spin up the virtual disk, eliminating any downtime or user interruption.

A few years ago our team used the VMware P2V assistant to clone the virtual disk and Double-Take to keep the associated data consistent which worked well and there have been some significant advances to accomplish this. I know that both Double-Take Software and VMware have released several new products that would have helped even more. Since this time Double-Take has released the Virtual Recovery Assistant to help provision virtual machines quicker and can even automate the protection of the machines for a disaster recovery solution. VMware has also improved the VMware converter and introduced Site Recovery Manager which helps move workloads between two virtual systems.

Planning will still be required no matter what you do, but you don't have to worry about what weekend (or worse - what holiday weekend) that you and your teams are going to attempt this great feat. It actually isn't that big of a hurdle anymore. So, what are you waiting for? Subvert the paradigm!
