Day 3 Wrap-up

Posted by James E. Price III Sep 2, 2009

VMworld Day 3 is a wrap, the VMworld Party is about to begin and it's time to reflect on the virtues of the day. In short, the best of VMworld 2009 can be surmised by saying that we have continued to evolve the technology but there isn't much "net new" to be found. There is an overwhelming amount of talk about clouds: vClouds, Internal Clouds, Public Clouds, Private Clouds and much like real clouds there's really nothing there. I don't want to seem underwhelmed about clouds but it is starting to feel a lot like ASP v2.

VMFS -3 (3.31) included new array command the reduces by 50% the number of command required to process SCSI Reservations. This is known as hardware accelerated lock manager. This is great news, now the real question is which array vendors support this new feature and have implemented it?  Another key question from the vendors perspective is will updates to the array firmware to support this feature require recertification?

Sateem did a great job addressing and explaining a very complex topic. Understanding how ESX and Guest OS I/O operations are handled is critical to scaling VI operations. The changes made in VMFS locking and reservations has significantly improvd performance.  The most notable change is the addition of Optimistic I/O.
